A Poetic Celebration of Christian Hope. Episode 7 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

July 27, 2020

This episode is a poetic exploration of the theme of hope. Spirituality opens our hearts and arouses our imagination; poetry does this better than prose. Listen in as Rev. Martin Smith reads extracts in translation from the beautiful poems of Charles Péguy about hope. Péguy was a prolific writer noted for his passionate advocacy for social justice and political integrity who in midlife rediscovered his faith, and sadly was one of the first French casualties of World War 1.

Becoming Agents of God’s Hope-fullness. Episode 6 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

Becoming Agents of God’s Hope-fullness. Episode 6 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

July 20, 2020

This podcast's theme is becoming Agents of God’s Hope-fullness. The Holy Spirit arouses our sense of connectedness through expanding empathy: we are all in this together, God-given hope is for each other and for all, since our hope lies in God’s undeterred weaving and reweaving of koinonia, communion. Today we take this reflection even further by recalling that hope is a vocation, a calling, and a ministry.

Becoming a Hopeful Person. Episode 5 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

July 13, 2020

Welcome to the fifth podcast in our series Seeking the Gift of Hope with Fr. Martin Smith.

The gift of hope is not a fix but a stance, a way of seeing the world, a way of life, a habitual tuning into the desiring of God. Hope is a core element of our character in Christ into which we grow over the long haul.

In Hope We Were Saved. Episode 4 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

In Hope We Were Saved. Episode 4 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

July 6, 2020

Welcome to the fourth podcast in our series Seeking the Gift of Hope with Fr. Martin Smith. Today’s theme is In Hope We Were Saved, a theme that is summed up in a verse from the 8th chapter of Paul’s letter to the Christian community in Rome. “In hope we were saved.”

It captures the tension that everyone who lives in Christ will experience between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet’. We were saved once and for all by Gods’ action in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. But our salvation is a work in progress; we are growing into our life in Christ. Furthermore, our salvation is bound to be radically incomplete; it cannot come to maturity until God finally draws everyone into that fulness of life, when as Paul said, “God will be all in all.” (1 Cor. 15:28)

Hope and the Resurrection of Jesus. Episode 3 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

June 29, 2020

Welcome to the third podcast in our series Seeking the Gift of Hope with Fr. Martin Smith. Today’s theme is Hope and the Resurrection of Jesus. Hope is no mere boost to our ability to keep on crossing our fingers. Hope is a gift of the Holy Spirit and we can’t grasp what it means except by asking the fundamental question about God’s identity and character.

Hope and Jesus’ Proclamation of the Reign of God. Episode 2 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

Hope and Jesus’ Proclamation of the Reign of God. Episode 2 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

June 22, 2020

You may be puzzled by the fact that the actual word ‘hope’ seldom occurs in Jesus’ original message. Why? Hope is not an ingredient in his message: hope is its thrust, its entire orientation. Seeking the gift of hope is seeking first the Reign of God and its setting things to right.

Our aim over these weeks is to seek the gift of hope. Join the Reverend Martin L. Smith in this second podcast in a series of eight exploring hope.

What is Hope? Episode 1 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

What is Hope? Episode 1 in Seeking the Gift of Hope Series

June 15, 2020

Join the Reverend Martin L. Smith in exploring the difference between genuine hope and phenomena such as optimism, looking on the bright side, forecasting, and the belief in the inevitability of progress. Where hope is understood as a gift of the Holy Spirit (linked with faith and love) we recognize that in hoping we are resonating with, participating in, the hopefulness of God, God’s innovative creativity in bringing newness to birth even out of the tragic and ‘unpromising.’ Hope is not a mere positive frame of mind but a practical commitment to become a volunteer in playing a part in making things new in Christ.

This is the first in a series of eight podcasts by Reverend Smith on the concept of hope.
