As we conclude our eight-episode series on the theme of hope, we again welcome Rev. Martin Smith. This week, Rev. Smith explores hope and the concluding affirmation of the Apostle’s Creed: "The Resurrection of the Body, and the Life of the World to Come." The resurrection of the body is a deliberately extreme expression, to suggest an extreme hope in God’s extreme love. That love does not merely connect with part of our humanity, discarding the rest. It embraces our entire embodiment, the fabric of our whole selves and the network of relationships in which we both suffer and flourish.

This episode is a poetic exploration of the theme of hope. Spirituality opens our hearts and arouses our imagination; poetry does this better than prose. Listen in as Rev. Martin Smith reads extracts in translation from the beautiful poems of Charles Péguy about hope. Péguy was a prolific writer noted for his passionate advocacy for social justice and political integrity who in midlife rediscovered his faith, and sadly was one of the first French casualties of World War 1.

This podcast's theme is becoming Agents of God’s Hope-fullness. The Holy Spirit arouses our sense of connectedness through expanding empathy: we are all in this together, God-given hope is for each other and for all, since our hope lies in God’s undeterred weaving and reweaving of koinonia, communion. Today we take this reflection even further by recalling that hope is a vocation, a calling, and a ministry.

Welcome to the fourth podcast in our series Seeking the Gift of Hope with Fr. Martin Smith. Today’s theme is In Hope We Were Saved, a theme that is summed up in a verse from the 8th chapter of Paul’s letter to the Christian community in Rome. “In hope we were saved.”

It captures the tension that everyone who lives in Christ will experience between the ‘already’ and the ‘not yet’. We were saved once and for all by Gods’ action in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. But our salvation is a work in progress; we are growing into our life in Christ. Furthermore, our salvation is bound to be radically incomplete; it cannot come to maturity until God finally draws everyone into that fulness of life, when as Paul said, “God will be all in all.” (1 Cor. 15:28)
